Wacissa is unincorporated, so clearing, floodplain and site questions go to Jefferson County's building and planning offices in Monticello. Because the river is an Outstanding Florida Water, parcels near the spring run or the low ground behind it should also raise wetland and water-quality review with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the water management district that covers your parcel. Our tract borders the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area. Does that change the work?
Mostly it makes the boundary the thing to get right. The Aucilla WMA covers upward of 47,500 acres of hydric hammock, flatwoods, cypress swamp and upland hardwoods across Jefferson and Taylor counties, and the FWC manages it with the Suwannee River Water Management District using prescribed fire and invasive species control. Before a mulching head works anywhere near a shared line, that line should be known and marked. Bring out corners, old blazes and whatever survey you have when a contractor walks the tract.
How close to the springs can clearing go?
That question belongs to the regulators, not to a matching service, and the honest answer is that it depends on the parcel. What is knowable is the setting: the Wacissa is an Outstanding Florida Water and a designated State Paddling Trail, at least twelve springs sit along the upper mile and a half of the river, and the county treats surface water protection over karst as a live concern. Take it to Jefferson County and the state before anything is scheduled. Where work is allowed, leaving mulch as ground cover rather than stripping to bare soil is the easier position to hold.
Half our acreage is wet hammock and half is drier flatwoods. One job or two?
It can be quoted as one job, but expect it priced in zones rather than at a single rate per acre. Hydric hammock is dense, wet-footed and slow going. Mesic flatwoods and longleaf ground are drier and move faster. A contractor who works this area will often phase it, taking the high ground when the schedule allows and the low ground once it has firmed up, and may leave the wettest strip alone. Describe both halves in the quote request instead of giving one acreage number.
