Panacea runs along US 98 between Dickerson Bay and Ochlockonee Bay — the largest coastal community in Wakulla County, and the point where the county's pine flatwoods give out into the Apalachee Bay salt marsh. The Sopchoppy River reaches the Ochlockonee just south of town. Boston investors bought the land around five mineral springs in 1893, dropped the old name Smith Springs and called it Panacea; before that, a large Civil War-era salt works stood here.

Hermine came ashore just east of St. Marks at half past one in the morning on September 2, 2016, with 80 mph sustained winds, and its surge collapsed the road at Alligator Point. Debris and broken trees from weather like that become clearing jobs later.

A mulching pass knocks the stand flat and gives you access and sightlines back, which is genuine progress. But all three resprout after a mulching job unless mechanical removal is paired with herbicide follow-up.
